Schönster Talschluss der Ostalpen

From Matrei’s “Tauernhaus”, along a forest road or a steep path, you hike to the “Innergschlöss”, 1691 m above sealevel, beneath the “Großvenediger”. Along the way: alpvillage “Außergschlöss” and a cliffs chapel.

Burgruine Rabenstein

Rabenstein looms over the municipality as a ruin. The defensive structure from the year 1703 fell to decay after a fire. Today, it is a rewarding hiking destination. Kirchplatz – Mellitz – Mellitzer Graben – or driving route to Eggerhof.

Wallfahrtskirche Maria Schnee

Frescos of the pilgrimage church from the 15th century in Obermauern, were painted by Simon of Taisten, the Gorizian counts’ court painter. Cultural-historical guided tours by request!

Kulturhistorische Kostbarkeit

The small church, in “Bichl”, is one of the most important sacred buildings in Austria and the entire Alp area. The frescos are a monument to the Alpine-Italian culture connection, before the gothic era.

Natur-Kraft-Weg Umbalfälle

The Umbal glacier’s meltwaters can be experienced as a gigantic spectacle of nature. Round tour with “Großbachfall”, suited for kids. Starting point: parking area “Ströden” (toll!) in Hinterbichl/Prägraten.

Neue Sajathütte, 2.600 m

2600m above sea level, the “Sajahütte” offers highest comforts. Two parlours, two patios, rooms and dormitory with breakfast buffet, 10m indoor climbing tower… Tyrolean cuisine. Luggage-transport available.

Lucknerhütte, 2.241 m

1 hour from the “Kalser Glocknerstraße” parking area. Organic specialities, vegetarian dishes, sun patio, playground, rooms, dormitory, seminar room, infrared sauna, Webcam: www.grossglockner-wetter.at.

Stüdlhütte, 2.802 m

The architecturally extraordinary “Stadlhütte” lies in the core zone of the national park “Hohe Tauern” at the Großlockner (2.802m). Local products are used in the kitchen. (rooms available)

Dem König so nah – Talrundweg Kals

It takes 6 h to walk the 19,5 km valley round trip. Single stages with freely chosen starts and exits. Easy path, scenic lookouts, rest areas, water wells, adventure stations, rope bridge.

Kalser Glocknerhaus

“Kals im Banne des Großglockners”, large mineral exhibition & national park room with films, 7 themed rooms show the unique landscape and culture, tradition, history of the first ascent and alpinism.

Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei

Obersee und Staller Sattel

The “Staller Sattel” is a mountain pass at 2.052 m above sea level, which connects the “Defreggental” valley and the South Tyrolian Antholzertal” valley. Traffic light controlled operating time for the Italian side. Opened May to November.

Einzigartiges Dorf am Berg

Impressive alp village with 18 historical cottages and a chapel. Starting point for the hike is the “Unterstalleralm”. The observation deck “Klapfbachwasserfall” is also reachable from there.

Alm-Kneipp-Pfad Winkeltal

Among the idyllic landscape, at the “Reiterstube”, you can find the “Alp-Kneipp-Path”. Water applications, barefoot path, vein stairs, resting area, herb and flower garden, playground, resting hut.

Volkzeiner Hütte, 1.886 m

Surrounded by pristine nature and many old alps, the “Volkzeiner” cottage is a starting point for various hikes to summits and mountain lakes, as well as an insider’s tip for gourmets. Rooms available!

Seenwanderung am Thurntaler

Spacious hiking paradise- “Thurntaler” lake or long round trip along the Thurntaler summit. Panorama view of the Dolomites, Carnic Alps and the Villgraten mountains. Family hiking tip: the “Three lakes”.

Wassermythos Ochsenlacke

High up in the Defereggental live remarkable beings. Five animal characters invite you to playfully learn more about the guardians of the water. From the middle station, an easy hiking trail leads directly to the water myth Ochsenlacke.

Wildtierbeobachtungsturm Oberhaus

The largest closed pine forest in the Eastern Alps is best explored on the nature and culture trail. The 22-metre-high wildlife observation tower Oberhaus offers a special nature experience.

Wasserfallsteig Celar

The path begins at the foot of the waterfall und continues in Serpentinen. Two spectacular observation decks offer a perfect view of the water masses. From there: “Bölbnerblick” cottage with “Celarkapelle” chapel.

Die wildromantische Raggaschlucht

Millenia of work and the Raggabach stream created one of the loveliest ravines of the Alps. Bridges along vertical rock faces, way back through the shady forest. “Geological learning path”. Free parking.

Porzehütte, 1.942 m

A forest road – leads from Obertilliach to the “Klapfsee” lake. From there, the “Porzehütte” is reachable by foot in 1 h on easy terrain. The cottage is a favoured destination for mountain bikers.

Aussichtsberg Golzentipp

By cable car in 5 minutes to the hiking area with 360° mountain panorama! A gently ascending slope leads right beneath the “Golzentipp” summit. Starting locations for paragliders near the top station!

Kindermeile am Golzentipp

The varied “kids-mile” along the baby stroller suitable hiking path of the top station “Golzentipp” consists of 13 stations. The view at the reservoir lake is a highlight for the whole family!

The Debanttal is perfect for family hikes and mountain biking – beautiful alpine landscape with a mighty mountain backdrop. Nature and cultural nature trail over two alpine pastures to the Lienzer Hut (with e-bike charging station).

Dolomitenhütte – staunen & genießen

The „Dolomites hut“ lies at the “entrance” of the Dolomites. Amazing decks, cosy parlours. 20 beds or 6 panorama double rooms & 2 family rooms. Experience tangibly with yoga and QiGong. No day off, closed in November!

Lavanter Kirchbichl

Archaeological finds in the museum near the Kirchbichl and in the archeological museum in the castle Schloss Bruck in Lienz. At the Kirchbichl you’ll also find the two pilgrimage churches St. Ulrich and St. Peter and Paul.

Frauenbach Wasserfall

An easily accessible path with a viewing platform offers a view at the
adventurous world of the roaring waterfalls. There’s also a round trip with a nature trail. Access limited to certain dates!

Alpe Stalle 1.714 m

Bruno, the innkeeper, welcomes you to the Alpe Stalle. At the Alpe Stalle you can enjoy Tyrolean delicacies such as Schlipfkrapfen, Tyrolean or Kasknödl, apple and curd strudel and much more. The rustic hut is open in summer and winter. In winter there is also a 2.5 km long illuminated family toboggan run.

Familienhotel Moosalm ****

The Moosalm, 1,006 m above sea level, can be reached via a gravel path or by cable car. In the parlours or on the sun terrace you can enjoy specialities from our own production. Starting point for hikes, climbing park, summer toboggan run, downhill track, llama trekking, adventure golf course, petting zoo and playground.

Mit dem Hüttentaxi mitten ins Hochgebirge! Geräumige Busse mit Allradantrieb bringen Sie nach Voranmeldung in kürzester Zeit zur Johannishütte. Wenn man will um drei Uhr früh. Dort können Sie den vierthöchsten Berg Österreichs aus allernächster Nähe betrachten, mit Tourenski besteigen oder einfach erklimmen. Auch Sonderwünsche und allgemeiner Taxidienst.

An educational trail under mighty larches

During fall, the 500-years-old larch stock has its most beautiful time. It’s also an experience during spring and summer. The learning path harbours monumental animals, which were specifically created by Erich Trost, an artist from Matrei.
